Tags: stories I was driving to Target at the Waterfront today. It was cold and rainy, just above freezing, and everyone seemed in a hurry to get home. About two cars ahead of me in the other lane, I noticed a Subaru outback with their gas tank flap open and the cap hanging down by the tether. Usually, I try to let people know if I can, but sometimes you can't catch them at a light where it's safe to stop.
After two or three lights, we finally happened to "line up" next to each other at a red light. Inside, there was an elderly couple so bundled up you could just see a little bit of nose and eyes between the layers of hats, hoods and scarves.
After gesticulating wildly to get their attention, I was trying to signal them to roll down their window. Finally the man seemed to understand, and then he pointed back toward the rear of their car and nodded. I gave him the thumbs up, then the light turned green and we drove away.
For some odd reason it gave me a very warm and fuzzy feeling to have had that whole conversation without any words at all. I felt very connected, like maybe we are not all that alone after all. It was a cheery way to end the day.
